How to Properly Clear Out A Bathroom Drain

How to Properly Clear Out A Bathroom Drain

It is necessary to take the time out each month to clean the drains within your home. There are multiple things, such as hair and scum, which can attach along the pipe and cause for blockages to form. These blockages can cause harm to your pipes and may eventually leak and or bust at any moment. To avoid having to call a plumbing contractor, here are a few tips and a run-through to get you through the maintenance of cleaning your bathtub drains.

1) It is best to start in the bathroom where a majority of water is used per day. When in the bathtub, remove the top of the top cover of the drain and any netting that has been secured to it. This part of the cleaning is going to be crucial because this is where a majority of the debris will need to be cleaned from. Once they have been removed and cleaned, take a screwdriver to go into the top part of the drain and clean out any loose debris that may have gotten through.

2) The best tool to use at this point will be a plumbing snake to get further into the drain leading out from the bathtub. At this point, you would uncoil the device and begin feeding it down into the drain for about four feet. The snake itself will chip away at the sides of the pipe to remove any attached debris and either allow it to flow down the drain or bring it back up when you recoil it. Be ready to do this multiple times until you come through with a clean recoil on the last attempt.

3) Once the snake part has been complete, refit the netting and the drain cover back securely back into place.
